2011 Xfinity High School Football for Nashville Video Productions

Key PA "Broken"

In August I went to Nashville to work on the feature film Broken.  As Key PA I was able to pass on the lessons I have learned and trained up a great squad of production assistants.  Every day on this show was a great adventure.  We only shot indoors the first two days and the rest...

Production Assistant on Laughing at The Moon

For most of May and June 2011 I worked as a Production Assistant on the film Laughing at The Moon.  This was an amazing experience.  I had some film set experience from doing behind the scenes for That Evening Sun but this was...

PA/Grip for HGTV Web Videos

Red Arrow Industries brought me in again for an HGTV shoot.  In search of Entertaining Kitchens and Man Bathrooms we visited some more really nice houses around Knoxville.  We used a ladder dolly and 5D to capture TVs behind mirrors, kitchens you could host a whole party in and an in home urinal.  We used Smoky Mountain Grip and Lighting's newest truck packed with all kinds of cool stuff like Lite Panels on booms, a ladder dolly, Rosco Scrims and ND frames.   I was familiar with most of the work involved and our gaffer Steve Spallone was more than happy to explain anything new.  It is great to find good mentors who understand I want to know the best way to do everything.  In just three days with Red Arrow Industries I have doubled my value as a grip.  HGTV will use the final videos for their website.

PA/Grip for House Hunters Promos

While locking up a set for the movie Laughing at The Moon I stopped a gentleman who turned out to be a local DP.  That week he got me hired by Red Arrow Industries to work on some promos for HGTV's House Hunters.  The shoot was done with a Canon 5D at three locations in Knoxville, including Villa Collina.  I spent the day working with shiny boards and a diffusion flag on a boom known as a sun swatter.  The houses we visited are amazing and this shoot was a great opportunity.  I look forward to working with Red Arrow Industries in the future.

Harlem Globetrotters Fan Photographer

When the Harlem Globetrotters played at the Thompson Bowling arena in Knoxville, Printroom.com hired me to do fan photography.  The assignment was to photograph as many fans as possible and distribute cards to help them find their photos online.  I practiced my stadium walking skills mastered as a camera operator for Smokies Baseball.  I was also challenged to ask strangers if I could take their picture. By the end of the night I had grown fearless.  I was asking everybody.  My pay was based on how many photos I generated so it was a lot like selling products at Blockbuster, ask everybody enough of them will say yes, and if you try a little harder you can even convince the reluctant ones.  I also got to shoot a three on three game during the halftime show.  I believe the players were local radio personalities.  I have done a lot of sports video but not still photography.  It was fun I hope I get the opportunity again soon.

HappyDagger.net Video

I shot a green screen video for Brad Carpenter's blog HappyDagger.net. He wrote a hilarious script and put on a great performance. I stretched out the backdrop in the music room at his parents house. I brought in my XHA1 all my audio gear and all my lights. It was a great day. Between shots we played with the dogs, ate pepper turkey sandwiches and generally had a great time. Brad has excellent taste in movies, he is mostly a writer but he has also made a few short films. He will be editing the footage so I am eager to see how it turns out. Before I left we were able to make sure the green screen worked and it keyed right out.

Production Assistant for Biggest Loser

Biggest Loser called me up to PA on a segment being filmed in Jefferson City.  I worked with a sound guy, a DP, and a producer from Biggest Loser.  We spent the day with Ryan Kelley from season 2.  We did an interview and some b-roll in her home then documented the Zumba dance class she teaches.  The shoot went great the crew had all the right knowledge and gear to quickly get a good looking shot.  I assisted with set up and break down of equipment, transportation, handling releases, and of course food and drinks for the crew.

Marker Factory B-roll for Production farm

Production Farm hired me to take my XHA1 out and get some b-roll of the Newell/Rubbermaid factory in Maryland.  They make Sharpie, and Expo markers there.  I grabbed footage of the workers, machines, products, and offices to be edited together with interviews shot at a different facility with an HVX.

The Pile

Normally we would not have made a horror film but when we saw the Knoxville Horror Festival had only a $7 entry fee we couldn't resist. Jason Lee, Michael Abbott and myself collaborated to come up with a story that would be a different take on the horror genre. What if the hero doesn't care about the monster?

Camera Operator for HighSchoolSports.net Football Game of The Week.

Starting with the 2010 football season I have been operating the close-up replay enabled camera for TSSAA Network.  Working with a director, graphics, announcers, to broadcast high school football and soccer to Comcast, WBIR, and the internet.

Camera Operator for Smokies Baseball

In July I started filming Smokies baseball games for the rest of the 2010 season.  I work with a director and switcher to cover the game as well as the crowd and other on field activities.  I rotate between shooting with the stationary and handheld cameras.  It is great to have a job where I get to run camera a few times a week.

ESPN Promo for the ESPY Awards

MRB Productions out of California hired me to work on a promotional film for the ESPY awards .  We used the large studio at HP Video in Knoxville.  I mostly worked with the art department on building sets as well as preparing props and costumes.  The shoot went really well.  It was great to work with a huge crew and all the necessary gear.  The short film stars Peyton Manning and will be played during the ESPY awards on July 14th.
